Some people feel that their gender roles are fixed at birth, while others have to work at feeling and living as their authentic self.
One final term that you should become familiar with is "sex role behavior." Sex-role behavior refers to the patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior that guide one's sexuality. People that live by the assumption that their primary sex characteristics--the physical traits we call "masculinity" and "femininity" --are fixed at birth are often deeply frustrated when this isn't true. Knowing your own reproductive system and its structure, identifying your primary and secondary sexual characteristics, learning your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors about sex, and knowing what your primary and secondary sex characteristics are, can all lead you to a much richer and fuller life.
